Los Roques: The best-kept secret of the caribbean

Recently Venezuela has captured the attention of the news but not for good reasons. Among other South American countries, Venezuela has got the highest inflation in Latin America, and according to recent surveys the country is rated the most insecure nation in the world. However there is a place in the nation that makes you believe that the only problem you can have is forgetting the suncream.

I am talking about Los Roques and its 350 paradisiac little islands, cays and islets; hot water, the whitest sands and perfect turquoise beaches. Since 1972, Los Roques was declared a national park due to the wide variety of seabirds and rich aquatic life it has.

Back in new year's eve of 2014 my family and I visited the island once again. We booked a "posada" (little guest house) and stayed there for 5 days. We landed at noon and ran to our accomodation to change our clothes and start the fun!.

As I mentioned, we have been there before but we do not get bored of it even if the only thing we can do is nothing. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of aquatic activities for beach lovers such as kitesurfing, snorkelling and Paddle boarding. However my favourite amusements are just staring at the stunning blue water, sink my feet in the sand and take pictures.

Los Roques's only income comes from tourism therefore locals rent their boats and take visitors from the little port in the "Gran Roque" to the cays of their preference. My favourites islands are "Crasqui" and "Bajo Fabian" even though the other beaches have also got their attractivenes.

Madrisqui, the nearest cay to the "Gran Roque" is just 15 minutes by boats, so it makes it the most visited beach in Los Roques.

Getting involve with the locals is the best, you can hear so many stories about the place and they can lend you their boat lol. Here with my sister while looking for a place to eat in "Crasqui" cay.

"Pirate cay" is another island of Los Roques, here you can have a lovely sea food as it has a restaurant with a wonderful view.

Another picture of "Madrisqui" at 9:30 am perfect scenario to relax, read a book and getting tan

Staring at the sunset in the "Gran Roque"

Having fun under the palm trees

Happiness!

Enjoying the gastronomy in the place which is mostly sea food: I ordered "ceviche" which is cured raw fish marinated with citrus flavorus! Delicious!

Sun bathing

Turquoise everywhere

Getting instructions before trying paddle boarding

Paddle boarding: Harder than it seems but still fun

Until next time beautiful paradise

Useful information: There are two airlines that travel to Los Roques Chapi air and Aerotuy, apart from private jets.

We traveled with Aerotuy and stayed in "Posada Del Recuerdo" very near to the port and the little town. It was a good option as it is not as expensive as the other guest houses.

If you are not scare of small planes then this paradise is waiting for you!
